Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union president Kanhaiya Kumar, who spent 20 days in prison on sedition charges, will pen his journey from a village in Bihar to the jail stint in a book titled 'Bihar to Tihar'.
Kanhaiya, 28, whose spunky speech to students after getting conditional bail went viral on social media, told TOI he had signed a contract with a publisher for the book that will come out both in Hindi and English."I will be completing the book before the start of the next semester," he said.
The story would be "in the social context of an oppressive society", said the PhD scholar of African studies, who grew up in Betia village of Begusarai district. Kanhaiya faces sedition charges over alleged anti-national slogans raised on campus during a February 9 event.
Although the book would be about his personal struggles, it would also cover larger social themes, Kanhaiya said.
"It's the story about how in this exploitative society (shoshan kari samaj), a boy from a marginalised section struggled his way to come to JNU to study and how some people target him. Against this backdrop, I would like to highlight certain facts of our society," he said.
The activist of the All India Students' Federation, a CPI-affiliate, has remained in the limelight ever since the "anti-national" event in JNU got reported in the media.
Coming out of jail on March 3, he has been touring campuses across the country, taking on the BJP government and the Sangh Parivar in his speeches.
Will Kumar continue his tirade against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the policies of his government? "He is the prime minister of the country and there is no fight with him," said Kumar, while getting ready for another series of protests, including a hunger strike against JNU administration's decision to suspend and fine students for the February 9 event. Kanhaiya has been fined Rs 10,000, in what many consider is a relatively light punishment.
The book, according to Kumar, is likely to be completed by July-August 2016."Everyday something or the other comes up. But I am working on it and probably it will be ready before the next semester," he said.
About the signing amount, Kumar laughed and said: "Who pays a student?" But when the student is Kanhaiya, exceptions can probably be made.
